Summer Ice Whirlwind！Hokkaido Milk Mixed with Kiwi Soft Serve to Beat the Heat

After the soft serve craze stirred up by Juanwei Family a year or two ago, there were almost always lines—weekdays or weekends. I remember that back when strolling through night markets, you’d often see a towering soft serve cone for just 20 or 30 NT$, but once they switched to rich Japanese flavors and stylish décor, the price instantly jumped to 90 or 100 NT$, yet everyone flocked to them. The term “dessert on a stroll” became synonymous with soft serve.

A soft serve craze has also started popping up around Taiwan. It’s safe to expect another intense soft serve battle this summer, as even famous shops from Japan and Korea have come to Taiwan. The trend in Taichung doesn’t seem as heated yet, so aside from INO ICE and Ludi, there aren’t many standout shops. I recently heard that a new [Golden Silk Soft Serve Specialty Store] had opened on Wuchuan Road, so of course, I had to check it out.


It was a little past one in the afternoon, and the sun was particularly scorching that day—the heat was so intense it felt like you could get steamed alive. This [Golden Silk Soft Serve Specialty Store] is located in a building storefront on Wuchuan Road, actually quite eye-catching. I had just arrived when I saw a bunch of people already standing by at the entrance, undeterred by the blazing heat and blazing sun.


It turns out that because they’re still in a trial sales period, there’s currently a buy-one-get-one-free promotion, but only until April 26th. (Though I heard that similar promotions will continue through the end of April.)


The shop follows the same Japanese-style soft serve décor—nothing too large, just a soft serve lamp hanging up. This summer, I think customers will pretty much come in automatically. After all, the media has brainwashed us deep down, and Taiwan’s summer heat really makes you want an ice-cold treat to cool off.


They say they’ll keep rolling out new flavors irregularly—the matcha flavor is already gone T_T
Currently, the new shop only offers two flavors per day: [Hokkaido Milk and Kiwi (seasonal limited)]—of course, you can mix them, so I figured trying a mix would let me enjoy both in one go!! But because it’s a new shop, there were tons of people, so we had to take a number and wait in line. The crowd wasn’t overwhelmingly packed, but we still ended up waiting nearly half an hour, nearly getting sunburned dry T_T

The shop is run by two girls—one handles orders and greets customers, while the other makes the soft serve. They were still cheerful enough to let us take photos with the soft serve. Working in this heat is tough on them. Both girls were really friendly—I think the cones are 80 NT$ each, though there’s a discount right now.

One side is light green, the other milky white, topped with two cookies (which you can also use as spoons). I feel the texture of the soft serve itself isn’t quite as Japanese-style as I expected—I’d define Japanese-style as dense and creamy. Especially the kiwi part, which actually reminded me a lot of Italian fruit-flavored ice cream, with a slightly slushy mouthfeel. Maybe the ratio could be tweaked a bit.

But flavor-wise, the kiwi had a refreshing taste, perfect for cooling down in the heat. The milk part wasn’t as outstanding in comparison—the taste was fine, but the texture of the ice itself was a bit off. That said, Golden Silk actually gives you a fairly generous amount.


Since it’s a new shop, their technique for squirting the soft serve isn’t totally smooth yet, so there are some inconsistencies in portion size—which is totally normal, even FamilyMart’s soft serve had that issue at first. I think it’s no big deal; just let the staff know.

If you order just one, it comes with a French cracker cookie on top—there’s a slight variation, but the texture is similar to the previous one. I think the milk part was a bit more generously portioned.

I’m thinking they might roll out other fruit flavors later, like pineapple, cantaloupe, or strawberry—but even on its own, the kiwi is pretty good, with its refreshing sweet-and-sour taste perfect for summer.

Actually, although I’m from Tainan—and Juanwei Family, which started the soft serve craze, is also from Tainan—I never really got into the soft serve trend. This year, I was feeling spontaneous and decided to try out the new shop’s flavors. I’ll probably check out a few more spots. After all, with FamilyMart’s Valentine’s Day strawberry-limited edition selling out, and matcha coming next, it’s clear this summer’s soft serve war is about to explode.

I remember when I was a kid, my memory of ice treats was the ‘Babu tricycle’—every afternoon when you heard the Babu sound, you knew to grab some coins and chase it down. Eating an ice in the blazing summer was such a simple little joy. But anyway, this Golden Silk soft serve has a satisfying portion, though I think the texture could be improved. Maybe the shop just aims for a lighter, less heavy style. Just sharing my simple thoughts with you all—Up!!!
