Pilots Teach Directly: China Airlines Partners with Tamkang University to Launch Civil Aviation Credit Course

Students dreaming of becoming pilots and flying now have more opportunities ahead. Today (20), China Airlines officially signed an industry-academia cooperation plan with Tamkang University, launching a civil aviation credit program. Professional instructors, including China Airlines pilots, will teach the courses, providing a comprehensive training environment that allows students interested in the aviation industry to gain an in-depth understanding of civil aviation practices in advance, while also nurturing new aviation talent for Taiwan.

Today, China Airlines held its first preliminary pilot recruitment test at Tamkang University. Eligible applicants with TOEIC scores of 650 or above were invited to take a written exam on campus. The entire process followed China Airlines’ official pilot recruitment procedures, and those who pass the test may have the opportunity to join the ranks of China Airlines pilots.

Tamkang University has departments related to aerospace, producing many outstanding aerospace professionals. Therefore, China Airlines chose to collaborate specifically with Tamkang University for the launch of its first civil aviation credit program. On May 20, China Airlines Chairman Sun Hong-xiang and Tamkang University President Chang Chia-yi jointly signed a memorandum for the “Strategic Framework for Aviation Talent Cultivation Cooperation.” Starting from the first semester of the 103rd academic year, the civil aviation credit program was introduced, covering core courses such as “Special Topics in Air Transport” and “Introduction to Flight Safety,” taught by professors from the aerospace department and the business school. It also added practical subjects recommended by China Airlines, including “Introduction to Flight Operations,” “Introduction to Civil Aviation Regulations,” and “Aviation English.” Additionally, the program integrates faculty from China Airlines and aviation management to offer the “China Airlines Practical Lecture Series,” where students can engage face-to-face with industry professionals to learn about the practical aspects of the aviation industry and career paths.

The “China Airlines Practical Lecture Series” is taught by senior Vice President and Captain Gao Xing-huang of China Airlines, along with heads of departments such as Flight Operations, Joint Control, and Corporate Safety. The content includes “Introduction to Civil Aviation Practices,” “The Nature and Management of Flight Operations,” “Flight Dispatch and Practical Introduction,” “Practical Aspects of Flight Training,” “A Day in the Life of a Pilot,” and “Practical Aspects of Aviation Safety,” among others. Students are also arranged to visit China Airlines for on-site observation. This program, which combines theory and practice, is open to students in their junior year or above.

China Airlines has long been promoting diverse industry-academia cooperation programs in flight operations, maintenance, air traffic services, and tourism management. Since 2012, it has successively partnered with nearly 10 universities and colleges, including National Taipei University of Technology, Tamkang University, Feng Chia University, and National Taiwan Normal University, to provide students with internship and employment opportunities in aircraft maintenance, organize cooking competitions to inspire creative cuisine, and assist academic departments in establishing internship travel agencies and offering subsequent operational consulting. With the innovative launch of this civil aviation program, China Airlines continues to cultivate young students for careers in the professional field of aviation.
