Tainan’s “2014 Baihe Lotus Festival” Kicks Off & 27 Wooden Wanderers Appear Among the Flower Seas

The annual “2014 Baihe Lotus Festival” has commenced in Tainan’s Baihe District, known as the “Lotus Town.” As 2014 symbolizes a lifetime of love, this year’s lotus festival spans an expansive area of 350 hectares. The Baihe District Office has also set up large installation artworks of baby lotus and lotus seed pod mascots, creating a sweet and joyful atmosphere of blooming happiness.

Baihe District in Tainan City is renowned as the “Lotus Town” for having the largest area of lotus fields in Taiwan. Thanks to the joint efforts of the municipal government team and local lotus farmers, this year’s lotus field area has increased by 100 hectares from last year to reach 350 hectares. Paired with activities such as a dedicated lotus viewing boulevard and vibrant flower sea landscapes, complemented by artistic installations among the blooms and the golden yellow trumpet trees in full blossom along the treetops, the lotus scenery in Baihe becomes even more breathtaking.

Meanwhile, another highlight at the Baihe Lotus Festival is the large environmental art interactive installation “27 Wanderers on the Street,” primarily made of solid wood and created by faculty and students of Tainan National University of the Arts. After receiving an overwhelmingly positive response during its initial exhibition on Haian Road earlier this year, the installation will launch its wandering plan—continuing to spread its charm across key scenic spots within Baihe and 8 rural regeneration communities.

The “2014 Baihe Lotus Festival” will run for eight consecutive weeks from now until July 13 in Baihe District, featuring a series of exciting events including weekend farmers’ markets, agricultural product showcases by regenerated rural communities, an art exhibition by local Baihe artist “Flower Granny,” children’s painted mailbox art installations, and more. After admiring the beautiful lotuses, visitors can also soak in the hot springs in nearby Guanziling, enjoy coffee in Dongshan, or explore Houpi’s “No Rice, No Problem” cultural movement to experience local agricultural heritage.
