The most distinctive features of the Southern Four Islands—the unique basalt volcanic landforms, abundant ecological resources, and cultural settlements—are precisely why the Ministry of the Interior deemed them suitable for national park status. The ministry stated that the establishment of the Penghu Southern Four Islands National Park will actively promote ecological conservation and the preservation of local communities, while also fostering marine education and planning for green tourism.

Chang Lung-cheng, director of the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration, noted that the area was once a major transportation hub in earlier times, even earning the nickname “Little Shanghai.” As a result, the traditional houses in the region still bear traces of its former bustling cultural life. The establishment of the national park is fundamentally aimed at education and conservation, and comprehensive environmental protection facilities will be planned. Although the resident population on the four islands is small and infrastructure somewhat lacking, these shortcomings will be gradually addressed following the park’s establishment. The park will also promote low-carbon, eco-intensive tourism, which is expected to boost overall tourism as well.
