The recently alarming "Top 10 Most Terrifying Takeout Foods" rankingpublished by the science communication websitePanSci raised several concerns yesterday. These include the background of the person who made the list, the number of food combinations, how the meals are prepared, and the misuse of the survey’s purpose. This unsettling report for takeout eaters appears to be facing serious credibility issues.
The report first pointed out that the original survey was commissioned by "a health supplement company" through the "Bosst Online Survey Network" targeting office workers’ working hours and their takeout habits. Its aim was to explore the relationship between working hours and the frequency of eating takeout. In other words, it wanted to convey that “the proportion of people in the country who eat takeout is very high.” However, the sample size, methodology, and connection to "terrifying takeout foods" cannot be determined from this survey data. Therefore, not only are the data in this report questionable, but its relevance to the "Top 10 Most Terrifying Takeout Foods" is also quite low..
Furthermore, many other food items could have been substituted for those listedon the ranking. For example, the "Korean fried chicken + beer" combo could be replaced with "salted crispy chicken + bubble tea," and "fried rice + meatball soup" could be replaced with "braised pork rice + meatball soup." At the same time, the calorie content of each listed food can vary greatly depending on cooking methods and portion sizes — a factor that was also not addressed in the ranking. The calorie content of each food item listed may also vary due to differences in cooking methods and portion sizes, which are not mentioned in this ranking..
