Keelung Zhongzheng Park’s “Totoro Bus Stop” – Totoro Holds an Umbrella as You Wait for the Bus

Totoro has made his way to Keelung now. The timeless classic animated film *My Neighbor Totoro* by legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki features an unforgettable scene where Satsuki and Totoro wait together for the bus. Now, there's no need to travel all the way to Japan — at Keelung’s Zhongzheng Park, you’ll find a “Totoro Bus Stop,” where the chubby Totoro holds an umbrella and waits with you for the bus.

The “Totoro Bus Stop,” where Totoro now makes a stop, was originally an illegal tin shed structure in Zhongzheng Park. It was demolished in 2013 after nearby Chenggong Junior High School parents complained about noise from people singing day and night, affecting students’ learning. After simple land leveling and greening, only the wall connected to the mountain was painted with a mural titled “Castle in the Sky.” However, the “Totoro Bus Stop” design was not part of the city government’s original plan.

Unexpectedly, a mysterious graffiti artist who had just returned from living in Australia happened to pass by and, seeing the large blank wall, got a sudden inspiration. He spent about a week painting a chubby Totoro holding its signature umbrella, waiting for the bus. The artist even thoughtfully added a bus stop sign labeled “Zhongzheng Park, Keelung,” making it so realistic that visitors might expect the Totoro Bus to arrive any moment.

After being shared online by netizens, this unintentional attraction went viral overnight. Even though there’s no direct bus to the site, many people have traveled from far and wide to see it. Schools have even organized outdoor lessons here just to view Totoro. Many visitors excitedly say it feels like stepping into a movie scene, and they joke that if they come at night, they might just catch the mysterious Totoro Bus. The Keelung City Government has expressed support for this creative work and may consider providing more spaces for artists to showcase their talents in the future.
