Snow huts and snowmen have appeared at Huashan – what’s going on? It turns out the annual Tohoku Play Day in Japan has kicked off. Not only has it introduced giant lanterns from Aomori’s Nebuta Festival to Taiwan for the first time, but it has also created a romantic and unique Akita Snow Hut Festival. A giant, super popular Akita dog is stationed there as well, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Japan’s Tohoku region. The event runs from Friday, December 8th to Sunday, December 10th for three days, and admission is free. If you want to experience a cultural journey through the six prefectures of Northeastern Japan, don’t miss this chance.

Snow huts from Tohoku’s winter festivals have been recreated using snow machines. These adorable and cozy snow huts, paired with two super cute large snowmen, not only create a romantic atmosphere but also quietly melt visitors’ hearts. Visitor Ms. Yang happily said, “It’s my first time seeing snow in Taipei—so exciting, and the snowmen are really big and cute.” Another visitor, Ms. Wang, who attended the Tohoku Play Day last year, mentioned, “The snowmen are a fresh addition, so I specifically brought my kids to take photos. The whole event is very thoughtfully done, and you really feel like you’re in Japan while inside.”

This year marks the fourth edition of the Tohoku Play Day in Japan, with the theme of “Winter Festivals.” For the first time, giant lanterns from Aomori’s Nebuta Festival have been imported from Japan. Hand-painted six-meter-wide Nebuta lanterns showcase the distinctly traditional winter festivities of the Tohoku region. The event also brings in specially crafted Akita washi paper balloons from Akita artisans, aiming to carry Taiwanese people’s heartfelt blessings back to Akita Prefecture. The super cute mascots of the six Tohoku prefectures have made their appearances, and the super popular Akita dog has been stationed at the entrance. Both adults and children can’t help but stop to take photos as they pass by.

The venue is bustling with continuous activities. One of this year’s highlights is the “Bowl Noodle Eating Contest – Taiwan Representative Selection.” Three competitive female eaters keep going bowl after bowl without taking a break. In the end, the first-place winner successfully challenged 60 bowls of soba noodles in less than four minutes. Watching the contestants quickly finish their meals on stage reminds the audience of their own experiences. Visitor Alan shared, “I once successfully ate 101 bowls in Northeastern Japan and even got a little gift—it was an unforgettable memory.”

The various traditional performances at the venue are also captivating to watch. Alongside the thrilling Shishi Daiko drum performances, there’s also the incredibly adorable crab dance.
