Nurturing local talent: The Okura Prestige Taipei selects six Taiwanese employees for training in Japan

More and more foreign companies are investing in nurturing Taiwanese talent. Japanese-owned The Okura Prestige Taipei has focused on training local talent since its opening in August 2012, with the goal of “developing our own service professionals.” This midsummer of 2014 will feature both an intern welcome and farewell event as well as a send-off ceremony for six elite employees going abroad for training. The first group of six elite team members will undergo one month of training in Japan based on their respective roles in Taipei. Their training will be tailored to match their duties back home. Looking ahead, these six team members are planned to serve as seed instructors, ensuring the fine heritage of hotel excellence takes root and thrives in Taiwan, thereby comprehensively enhancing the soft skills of the younger and middle-aged generations.

In addition, The Okura Prestige Taipei has partnered with educational institutions since before its opening. Current partners include: Taipei City University of Science and Technology, National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Jian Wen University of Science and Technology, and Hsuan Chuang University. These programs last from six months to a year, allowing students to further hone their skills in their desired career fields. The human resources department of The Okura Prestige Taipei designs training aligned with essential knowledge for hotel work. During their internship, aside from developing on-the-spot responsiveness and resilience, interns also build second-language communication skills, deportment, self-protection in the workplace, and guest safety awareness — all fundamental components of becoming a well-rounded hospitality professional. Interns not only receive the same level of training as full-time staff but also enjoy identical benefits within the hotel.
