Suicide prevention: Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to install safety nets, completion expected in 2018

The Golden Gate Bridge is considered one of the most iconic landmarks in San Francisco by many. However, since its completion, there have been over 1,400 suicide cases, peaking at 46 in 2013—the highest number on record. According to BBC reports, in light of this, 19 bridge officials unanimously approved a $76 million plan to install safety nets to prevent further tragedies.

However, due to the high cost and difficulty in securing funding, the report noted that the issue was only resolved after the U.S. passed legislation allowing safety measures such as nets to be eligible for federal subsidies. For this Golden Gate Bridge net installation project, the federal government will allocate a subsidy of $49 million.
