Stop driving temporarily！Kenting’s “Crab Protection: Stop, Look, Listen for 120 Seconds” campaign kicks off on August 10

To protect female land crabs as they cross roads to the sea to lay eggs, Kenting National Park Headquartersis implementing for the first time this yearthe “Crab Protection: Stop, Look, Listen for 120 Seconds”conservation measure, during which all inbound and outbound inner lanes will be simultaneously closed for 120 seconds at every full hour—10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes—allowing the land crabs to safely cross the road to release their young,and drivers are urged to fully cooperate.

On Kenting’s summer nights or along the roads leading to the coast, groups of “heavily pregnant” female land crabs hurry to cross the road to release their young into the sea. To protect them, Kenting National Park Headquarters will, as in previous years, regulate traffic on a 2-kilometer stretch of Provincial Highway 26 between kilometers 39.5 and 41.5 during the peak breeding season, reducing the original four lanes to two (by narrowing the outer lanes in both directions).

In addition to traffic control this year, the “Crab Protection: Stop, Look, Listen for 120 Seconds” measure is being carried out for the first time. Volunteers from the Pingtung Environmental Protection Alliance and the Pingtung County Education Industry Union will educate motorists about land crab conservation, aiming to reduce the number of crabs killed on roads through these traffic management and awareness efforts.
