Last updated 2026-11-08 — That was about two years ago, but even now, thinking back gives me goosebumps and leaves me feeling uneasy. Two years ago, it happened to coincide with the transition between two jobs. My then-boyfriend and I traveled to Thailand. I don’t remember much about the trip details, except that we visited Thailand’s most famous attraction, the “Bridge on the River Kwai.” Yes, that tourist spot where many people lost their lives.

The job of a “travel journalist” is rich and diverse, often offering opportunities to travel around the world, filled with various challenges. However, this seemingly fun job not only requires independence and a willingness to try new things but also often involves staying in various hotels alone and visiting peculiar locations—naturally leading to many unusual encounters. For this “Ghost Month when the Gates of Hell Open,” ETtoday EVA Air Travel Cloud specially collected experiences from multiple online travel journalists, revealing ghostly encounters that readers never see before or after the reports—experiences of travel journalists encountering the supernatural.

That was about two years ago, but even now, thinking back gives me goosebumps and leaves me feeling uneasy.

This scene only came back to me afterward. While visiting a nearby attraction by the Bridge on the River Kwai, I caught a fleeting glimpse of what looked like human bones, carelessly discarded by the roadside—very inconspicuous. At the time, I only took a quick look and didn’t retain much memory of it. Of course, this image also slipped my mind after I returned to Taiwan and started my busy new job.

In the following year, nothing strange actually happened to me. In fact, I had a special connection with Thailand because I ended up traveling there five or six times within a year for work, and each trip went smoothly. But then, after a full year had passed, one winter day, I suddenly started feeling extremely tired, my steps heavy, and my body completely lacking energy. I fell ill on and off for a very long time, with no signs of improvement.

At the time, I just found it strange but didn’t think too much about it. However, being Taiwanese, I sometimes wonder if I’ve been cursed or something, so during a holiday, I went back to my hometown and visited a nearby temple to pray, hoping it would improve my health.

“A Thai girl has followed you back,” I remember the temple’s spirit medium telling me at the time. I was startled and had no idea how to handle it. But at the same time, the medium spoke with her and relayed the conversation to me: “She said she was killed by her Taiwanese boyfriend in Thailand and hopes you can help.” Killed? Panic filled my heart, but I had no idea what to do.

The temple teacher said the girl didn’t mean to harm or trouble me. She had just followed me back because I’m Taiwanese, hoping I might be able to help. That story, they said, might have happened a very, very long time ago. The teacher helped a little, and I heard that the girl subsequently left me and went to a better place.

Still, when I recall the glimpse of bones I saw near the Bridge on the River Kwai and how I rarely traveled to Thailand for work but suddenly went there five or six times within a single year, it all feels like... some kind of sign from beyond.
