Couples Who Walk Across It Will Have a Lasting Love – Alishan’s “Heavenly Longevity Bridge” Reopens

On the way to Alishan via Route 18 in Chiayi, the must-visit scenic spots “Heavenly Longevity Bridge” and “Everlasting Bridge” are not to be missed. The Heavenly Longevity Bridge has just reopened today, and legend has it that if couples walk hand-in-hand across both bridges, their love will last forever.

Built in 1937, the Heavenly Longevity Suspension Bridge is about 136 meters long and crosses an upstream tributary of the Bajhang River. With picturesque scenery and the sound of flowing water, it stands at different heights alongside the “Everlasting Bridge.” In front of the two bridges is the Dragon Hidden Temple, which is highly popular for worshipping the deities of the Laughing Buddha. The view is expansive, and the interplay of mountains and water creates a scene straight out of a painting — a must-visit spot on the way up the mountain. However, the suspension bridge had been severely eroded and damaged by the foundations due to typhoons such as Typhoon Sinlaku and Typhoon Morakot, leading to its closure after being deemed unstable by Chiayi County Government.

After restoration efforts by the Alishan National Scenic Area Administration last year, the newly rebuilt Heavenly Longevity Bridge has now reopened. The administration also expressed hope that reopening the bridge would revive fond memories for visitors of the beautiful areas around Alishan. Around the Dragon Hidden Temple, there are many unmissable stone sculptures, including adorable and playful Eighteen Martial Arts Boys, Four Seasons Boys, Chess-Playing Boys, and vividly crafted Twelve Zodiac Animals. Additionally, the wishing bell in the small park next to the temple allows visitors to ring in happiness amidst the mountain mist — one ring symbolizes peace, two rings joy, and three rings happiness.
