Lively southern Taiwan isn’t just about sunny beach resorts like Kenting. In a lesser-known mountain area of Pingtung, there’s a small shrine rich in history and Japanese culture, along with a pure white torii gate standing atop the hill, facing the surrounding mountains and the azure coastline. From this high vantage point, the white of the torii, the green of the forest, and the blue of the sea blend into a harmonious scene that soothes the soul — a hidden Japanese enclave in the mountains, as visitors often call it.

This small Kosshi Shrine in Mudan Township, Pingtung, was restored by Japanese Shinto priest Sato Kenichi in gratitude for the support Taiwan showed Japan after the 311 earthquake. With an investment of 10 million yen (approximately 2.56 million NTD) and over a year of work, the abandoned 70-year-old shrine from the Japanese colonial era has been revived to its former Japanese charm. Since Manzhou Township isn’t a well-known tourist spot, not many people visit — but it’s precisely this tranquil atmosphere that makes the Kosshi Shrine and the white torii gate stand out like a secluded paradise.
