After organizing my Kyoto food map, I realized I had forgotten to write about my visit to Rokudenya two years ago. Rokudenya is tucked away in Pontochō, an area mostly filled with upscale eateries, making it hard to imagine it’s the home of budget-friendly dan dan noodles. This post doesn’t include any photos of Rokudenya’s exterior because I was scolded by the owner sticking his head out of the shop while I was taking them. (Later, I learned from a friend that the owner dislikes customers taking photos facing other shops, as it might affect their business.)

Menu ~ There are quite a few options for dan dan noodles.

Another signature dish at Rokudenya: Doteyaki.

The star of the show — Doteyaki. Honestly, this doteyaki is incredibly delicious, leaving an unforgettable impression. The radish is stewed until almost melt-in-your-mouth tender, drizzled with a special sauce that leaves you wanting more.

Special Dan Dan Noodles. As expected, the special version is quite different (and also much pricier), with the whole bowl featuring just one large piece of char siu pork in the center.

Black Sesame Dan Dan Noodles. The aromatic noodles arrive at your table, and it's almost torture to resist digging in before taking photos. The chewy, springy noodles are fully coated in a slightly spicy sauce that makes you want to ask for a second bowl right away (?
