Tainan’s Koji Bar gained popularity with its cat-paw-shaped egg cakes, and later introduced a series of green tea-flavored cat-paw roasts and dog-bone-shaped egg cakes that melted the hearts of many. In December, they launched chess-themed egg cakes, taking traditional snack designs to the next level with a creative twist!

The shop named the chess-themed egg cakes “Chess King Roast,” featuring eight different characters: 将 (General), 士 (Advisor), 象 (Elephant), 兵 (Pawn), 车 (Rook), 马 (Horse), 炮 (Cannon), and 卒 (Pawn). This allows customers to play a game of chess on the spot. The chess-shaped egg cakes can be filled or plain. Filled ones are sold in sets of 3 for NT$40, plain ones in sets of 5 for NT$40, and 7 for NT$50. Want all 8 characters? The owner joked that you’d need to buy two sets—but a photo posted on social media earns you an extra piece.

In a game of chess, you capture your opponent’s pieces one by one. Not good at chess? This time, it’s your turn to eat the pieces. The chess-themed egg cakes come with a variety of fillings, including classic butter, chocolate, and Oreo flavors. Recently, Koji Bar also added Guanlan green tea glutinous rice balls to the mix—you can actually bite into whole green tea glutinous rice balls inside the cake, with a delightfully bursting filling.
