Write a song for post-explosion Kaohsiung: Qijin Black Sand Rock Festival launches band auditions

Following the Kaohsiung gas explosion incident, in addition to severely impacting the city’s once-thriving streetscapes, it also caused panic and unease across Taiwan. The “Hey! Song Rock Festival” — Qijin Black Sand Rock Festival — will hold its inaugural event on October 11 at Qijin Beach. Ahead of the festival, the “Black Sand Creative Big Band Audition” is being launched early, with the slogan “Love Kaohsiung with rock, support Kaohsiung with music.” The event invites creative bands from all over Taiwan to compose melodies that express their love for Kaohsiung and write lyrics and songs that voice their support, crafting a song for the city.

The English name of the Black Sand Rock Music Festival, “Hey! Song,” symbolizes an indomitable voice, using powerful sounds and free rhythms to showcase the spirit of rock. As Kaohsiung undergoes reconstruction following the gas explosion, let us use music to heal the wounds of local residents. Let rock be more than just intangible notes — let it become a way of life, carrying forward the spirit of rock as we surge forward with a vibrant Kaohsiung.

Since the announcement of the “Black Sand Creative Big Band Audition” on August 28, within just nine days nearly 30 original bands have signed up enthusiastically. Many creative bands from around Taiwan have called to inquire, showing an overwhelming response. The number of participating bands is expected to set a record, demonstrating the love young creative bands across Taiwan have for Kaohsiung. Any band with two or more members can apply by submitting original rock or light rock songs that express love for Kaohsiung. The online registration and submission period runs from now until 18:00 on September 12.
