Is going out on a rainy day a buzzkill? But the aftermath might bring unexpected surprises. The expansive beauty of Sun Moon Lake’s shimmering waters and surrounding mountains has long been a popular destination for travelers from home and abroad. Cycling under the sunny sky on a clear day lifts the spirits, and recently Nantou has often seen afternoon showers. Then, on the evening of the 12th, a huge semi-circular rainbow appeared over Sun Moon Lake, delighting and astonishing visitors.

Around 4 or 5 p.m. after an afternoon thunderstorm, an enormous rainbow appeared in the sky over Sun Moon Lake. Its two ends stretched across the entire water surface, with dark clouds still lingering at the far end, but the area beneath the rainbow was gradually clearing. The pristine, transparent islands and blue sky looked as if enclosed in a glass dome, and this stunning natural scene attracted many visitors to stop and take photos.

He Xinghong, captain of the Sun Moon Lake Love Boat, who captured the scene at Shuishe Dam, said, “Rainbows occasionally appear in the sky after rain, but this is the most beautiful one I’ve seen this year.” Next time you visit Sun Moon Lake, even if it rains, don’t be disappointed—rainy days might just lead to a beautiful rainbow sighting.
