Free Autumn Foliage at Fushimi Rokusho Shrine in Kyoto – Experience the Fiery Passion of Crimson Leaves

Although it’s free, the beauty of the autumn foliage is in no way compromised. For example, Fushimi Rokusho Shrine, which this article introduces, is one such gem.
Fushimi Rokusho Shrine is located in the Shugakuin area. It takes about 10 minutes on foot from Shugakuin Station on the Eizan Electric Railway. The shrine features a serene atmosphere, lush greenery, and scenic views — all of which combine to create an ideal spot to spend a peaceful day.

Fushimi Rokusho Shrine was established during Japan’s Jōgan era. It was originally built at a location higher than Shugakuin, roughly where Hieizan is today. Later, it was moved to its current location near Shugakuin Imperial Villa. In the 7th century, when Shugakuin Detached Palace was constructed, the Emperor granted the land known as “Sagi no Yashiro” (Shrine of the Heron) and the shrine was relocated here.

The approach to the shrine is lined with brilliant red maple leaves.
