“Top 20 Best Museums in Asia” — The Palace Museum Ranks 3rd; Taichung and Kaohsiung Also Make the List

The “2016 Theme Index & Museum Index Global Attractions Attendance Report” released by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) and AECOM has recently been unveiled. In terms of museums, the National Palace Museum in Taipei, although seeing a slight decline in visitor numbers in 2016, still ranked 12th among the world’s top 20 museums. In the ranking of the top 20 museums in Asia, three museums from Taiwan made the list.

The report pointed out that in 2016, museum attendance in Asia increased by 3.1%, mainly due to the Chinese government’s policy-driven push to build hundreds of new museums each year, many of which offer free admission. For instance, the National Museum of China became the most visited museum in the world for the first time, topping both the global and Asian top 20 lists.

In Taiwan, the National Palace Museum, now an iconic tourist destination in Taipei, welcomed 4.66 million visitors in 2016. Although this represented an 11.8% decrease compared to 2015, it still ranked 12th among the world’s top 20 museums. In the
