▲Autumn in Inunakiyama is coming to an end.

Inunakiyama is a popular hot spring destination and maple viewing spot in Osaka. With its fresh air and tranquil natural environment, many visitors come here specifically to relax in the hot springs. Many also take daytime hikes along the mountain trails—about a 1.5-hour round trip lets you enjoy verdant forests, waterfalls, and a refreshing forest bath.

Inunakiyama is rich in legends and stories, and you can learn about them from the shrines or small sacred sites placed along the path. For example, beside the trail sits the Enmusubi (Yokitsuri Daimyojin), the god who severs connections. Locals say this deity can cut ties, so many visitors hoping to escape bad relationships or undesirable partners come here to pray.

Aside from autumn leaves and hot springs, another famous attraction on Inunakiyama is the “Gyōja Waterfall” at the end of the trail. This is one of Japan’s few known sites where you can actually experience ascetic training. Many people come specifically to stand under the waterfall, holding onto a rope while enduring its powerful rush—a form of personal discipline. These days, the number of female practitioners has been increasing year by year, and now visitors can also try the experience. From March to November on the third Sunday of each month, you can book in advance to experience “waterfall asceticism.” Each session costs 2,000 yen, and training clothes are provided.
