Ultra-private recommendation: Korea’s “Four Hidden Maple Viewing Spots” loved by popular writers — don’t miss them this year

As autumn begins, it's also maple season in Korea, which lies at a higher latitude than Taiwan, and the country is gradually entering its peak foliage period. According to estimates by the Korea Tourism Organization based on data from the Korea Meteorological Administration, the most popular spots such as Seoraksan and Jirisan will start showing orange-red tints in the mountains by the end of September, followed by Naejangsan and Jirisan, where forests will be ablaze with red foliage by mid-October, offering breathtaking views.

ETtoday Eastday Travel Cloud also interviewed veteran expat writer and popular blogger “Sonic,” who has lived in Korea for many years, to recommend “ultra-private maple viewing spots” in and around Seoul. So, what’s on this expert’s hidden list? Let’s find out together. Sonic explained that while common maple-viewing spots in Korea include Seoraksan, Naejangsan, and Jirisan, he’s recommending “Four Must-Visit Private Maple Viewing Spots” to give travelers more unique options for enjoying Korea’s autumn foliage.

1. Ilsan Lake Park

Sonic said, “This is the park most featured in Korean dramas and is also Korea’s largest artificial lake park. Located in Gyeonggi Province’s Ilsan, just outside Seoul, it is also an important venue for seasonal flower exhibitions, showcasing different looks throughout the year — spring, summer, autumn, and winter — and you’ll never tire of visiting. With the lake reflecting the gradually deepening orange hues of the maple trees, it almost feels like you’re in Europe.”

2. The Stone Wall Road near Deoksugung Palace (Jeongdong-gil)

Deoksugung is one of Seoul’s most famous spots for both maple and ginkgo viewing. Though it’s a popular destination, Sonic noted that Deoksugung is located near City Hall Station, adjacent to Myeongdong. It was highly recommended in the book “Seoul Mayor’s Private Route,” authored by former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, as “the most walkable street.” The book also mentioned that K-pop idol group Super Junior filmed a stroll scene here. 3. Nami Island

Strolling through fallen red leaves during autumn and winter is a must-visit maple spot recommended by Sonic. 4. Pundang Central Park

“This is a spot most tourists don’t visit — my own secret spot,” Sonic laughed. Located in the suburbs of Seoul, Pundang Central Park was featured in the Korean drama “Tears of Heaven.” While it used to be a beloved cherry blossom spot for locals, few know that its autumn foliage, painted in shades of red, is equally mesmerizing.
