After a full day of exploring Sanxia and Yingge, I was starving. I quickly asked Nicole, a local, for restaurant recommendations. Turns out, Grandpa Hai’s — the place I’d been wanting to try — was right nearby. No time to waste, let’s go pay homage, Up!!

If you want air conditioning, you might want to skip this one — it’s just a small stall under the arcade, serving simple noodle dishes. But the non-stop stream of customers says it all about how good it is~

The most famous items here are definitely the No. 4 Dry Noodles and the Red Oil Century Egg Noodles. If you can’t handle spice, the Pork & Tofu Meatball Noodles are a great choice. Just grab a seat and order directly from the noodle-cooking auntie.

The top seller on group-buying sites is also the No. 4 Dry Noodles combo. It used to be so popular you couldn’t always get it. This time, after trying the Red Oil Century Egg Noodles at the stall, I loved them so much I immediately bought a big takeout box. Even after eating it for two days straight, it still tasted amazing.

Cold Tossed Fish Skin
Just eating noodles seemed a bit plain, so we got a side dish to share. We picked the fish skin, which looked really flavorful — perfect for getting some collagen. The crispy texture was so satisfying.

Red Oil Century Egg Noodles (Small) $50
At first glance, the Red Oil Century Egg Noodles might not look like much, but one bite reveals their true power. The spicy kick made me gasp at first, but I just couldn’t stop eating more — truly magical.

Mixing the dry noodles lets the sauce coat every strand. As I ate, I kind of regretted not grabbing a drink first. The college students at the next table all had drinks ready. I was sweating as I ate, and I’ve been getting more sensitive to spice lately, but these Red Oil Century Egg Noodles were just so satisfying!!

No. 4 Dry Noodles (Large) $80
If the Red Oil Century Egg Noodles are too spicy for you but you still want to try something similar, go for the No. 4 Dry Noodles. These include sesame paste for extra flavor, which tones down the heat a bit and adds a nutty aroma. It’s another fan favorite.

Doesn’t this pot full of Red Oil Century Egg Noodles look mouthwatering? It has stir-fried pork mince mixed with chopped century eggs for seasoning. Actually, there are several other pots of the same special sauce around — that’s how popular it is. You can even take a whole bowl to go and cook it yourself at home. I regretted not buying more. Luckily, Sanxia isn’t far, so I can always stop by for takeout. Friends outside the area can order the group meal and cook it at home — it’s delicious too.
