The slightly Japanese-sounding name “Sanmei Hall” matches the elegance and sweetness of the Japanese-style old house it inhabits.
Wandering into a small alley in downtown Hualien, you’ll find a quiet Japanese-style dessert shop. Shop owner Amanda says the name “Sanmei Hall” is 60 years old, originating from a tiny dessert shop her grandmother ran in 1956 in front of Hualien Theater on Zhongzheng Road. It later moved to Gongyuan Road, then relocated again to Zhongfu Road, where it switched to selling bedding and household goods—operated by her grandmother and mother across two generations. It closed in 1996, but the name “Sanmei Hall” remained in her childhood memories until she unexpectedly opened this dessert shop.
