Can you learn to surf in the city without worrying about danger? In recent years, many people have taken to surfing at the beach, often needing to check wave conditions and wake up early to catch the ocean’s power. But now, Bangkok has seen a surge in “urban surfing,” with artificial surf pools built inside malls where waves can be generated anytime. This allows for safe, year-round surfing lessons, with instructors always on hand.

Located in Bangkok, “Flow House” has branches in the UK, the US, and other locations, making this its fourth new Asian outlet. Its accessibility via the BTS skytrain attracts many visitors, including frequent visits from Thai celebrities. The semi-outdoor surf space isn’t very large — it gets crowded with just about three to four people surfing at a time. Though not as vast as ocean surfing, it offers a unique thrill while allowing you to safely master the basics of surfing.

Instructors are always available at the artificial surf pool to guide you. As soon as you enter the surf area, the strong currents might make it hard to keep your balance. The instructor will first have you stabilize your body, lying prone on the surfboard. Once balanced, you’ll try kneeling to maintain stability before finally standing up and attempting various maneuvers. Though it may seem difficult at first, the basics quickly become second nature, making it a lot of fun.

In Bangkok, where the temperature is high all year round, the artificial surf pool offers a uniquely refreshing experience for city dwellers. Though it’s physically demanding, you can safely enjoy the thrill and the workout. Pricing is by the hour, with sessions around 800 TWD per hour, allowing you to keep practicing in front of the waves and enjoy the exhilarating feeling of riding them. Travelers visiting Bangkok should definitely give it a try.
