Taiwan, surrounded by the sea, boasts numerous surfing spots—from the northern coast, Yilan’s Wushi Harbor, Taitung’s Donghe to Kenting’s South Bay. Every summer, these destinations attract crowds of surfers. But beyond these, there’s one must-visit spot you shouldn’t miss: “Kenting Jialeshui.” It’s surfable year-round, and even beginners can quickly get the hang of it with coaching. After a session, unwind on the beach, soaking in the stunning blue seascape—a truly fulfilling experience for body and soul.
For experienced surfers, just bring your board and enjoy the ride. But if you’re new to surfing, it’s safest to seek help from a shop offering lessons. Under a coach’s guidance, start by watching demonstrations of basic moves by the lake, then warm up before practicing in the water. The calmer lake is perfect for beginners to grasp essential surfing techniques. Once you’ve got the basics down, you’re ready to “hit the ocean”!

Jialeshui Surf Club notes that compared to Wushi Harbor, which often resembles a “crowded pot of dumplings” in summer, Jialeshui offers more spacious surfing conditions and is surfable all year. Smaller waves are especially beginner-friendly. Though the waves aren’t huge, catching them still takes a few wipeouts—but with a coach, it’s far easier than figuring it out alone. After a few tries, you’ll get the hang of it, find your balance, and standing up becomes much simpler.

Watching pros glide effortlessly over waves may seem easy, but surfing is actually quite physically demanding. Yet once you steady yourself on the board, the sense of achievement for beginners is unmatched—even girls who usually avoid the sun and have never surfed can’t resist diving in again and again, exclaiming, “I’m hooked!” Even when exhausted and sunburned, they can’t help but grab their boards and head back into the sea. That’s the magic of surfing!
