Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Begins Filming: Johnny Depp Navigates an Adventure in the Great Barrier Reef

Disney has officially announced that the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series will begin shooting in Queensland, Australia. This marks the largest international film production ever undertaken in Australia. Johnny Depp, who plays Captain Jack Sparrow, will set foot on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef this time, taking audiences on a mysterious and epic adventure.

The Queensland government predicts: “Filming the Pirates of the Caribbean series in Australia will generate an economic benefit of 21.6 million Australian dollars, create thousands of local jobs, and mark the largest international film ever shot in the country—showcasing Australia’s world-class advantages as a filming destination.” The Great Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Stretching over 2,300 kilometers along the coast of Queensland, Australia, it is the world’s largest coral reef system with one of the most complete ecosystems. It is also considered a must-visit destination by many travelers.

Pre-production for the film will begin this month, with principal photography expected to start in February next year. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. The film is scheduled for a global release in July 2017.
