“Ah, what will I get this time?” The childhood excitement of playing with gashapon machines is now enjoyed by many adults too. Recently, a large number of gashapon machines have appeared at major airports in Japan. At around 200 yen (approximately NT$55) per try, they’re perfect for visitors to use up their leftover coins from traveling. Even locals can’t resist giving them a go, often exclaiming, “Such an affordable price, yet such amazing stuff!”

Kansai International Airport, the largest in western Japan, installed 118 gashapon machines in its Terminal 2 in April this year, and added another 145 in Terminal 1 by the end of July, marking the largest-scale setup to date.
The mastermind behind this is TAKARA TOMY A.R.T.S, the company behind the popular kids’ toy TOMICA cars. The airports under their management house 162 gashapon machines at Narita, 263 at Kansai, 34 at Asahikawa Airport in Hokkaido, and 20 at the Limousine Bus stops serving Narita and Haneda. Around 80–90% of users are international visitors, and monthly sales are 3 to 5 times higher than those of regular retail store gashapon machines—an astonishing performance.
