Alternatively, if you’re worried about exceeding your data limit, you can rent a device that connects to wired internet, using the hotel’s Wi-Fi at night without using up your mobile data.

“Region”is another major consideration. Shin Machida notes that whether it’s the popular “docomo Zero” or “au Arashi” mobile Wi-Fi models, both work well across Japan, including in suburban and mountainous areas — especially since Docomo has the highest network coverage, and AU also performs very well. Y!mobile, on the other hand, is best in urban areas. Users can select a model based on the strengths and weaknesses of each.HORIZON alone offers as many as five different Japanese models and four major telecom providers to choose from.
