Special Edition for the Seventh Lunar Month: That Night on the River—Who Was Rocking My Bed?

This is a story from a business trip to a certain country in Southeast Asia. On the first day of arrival, I found myself in a place known as a major military stronghold, which has witnessed significant historical battles. The day’s itinerary included sampling local specialties, visiting nearby attractions, and then checking into an overwater bungalow. Staying in an overwater bungalow for the first time was quite a novelty—every step I took made the floor gently sway. When I playfully tried walking more heavily, the floor would rock with varying intensity, making its presence very noticeable.

The atmosphere in the overwater bungalows was wonderful, with endless views of rivers and mountains. Many foreigners also choose to vacation here. While taking a stroll along the shore, I struck up a conversation with a foreign couple and learned that they had come specifically for their honeymoon, planning to stay for a week. Their leisurely pace was truly enviable.

After dinner by the river with my travel companions, we enjoyed a Southeast Asian-style buffet. With our stomachs full and spirits high, we each retreated to the balconies of our rooms, lying in deck chairs to stargaze. The star-filled sky was truly a rare sight in Taipei, and this moment was unforgettable for life.

My travel companions’ rooms were all next door—rooms 1 through 8 were all ours, each person having their own room. After stargazing, I went inside to shower and get ready for bed. It was around 10:30 or almost 11:00 PM. As I lay in bed, I could feel slight vibrations whenever someone walked past outside, gentle movements as if someone were lulling me to sleep. It was a good night’s sleep overall.

The next morning, I had breakfast with my travel companions. A girl from the next room started a conversation, vividly describing her experience from the previous night. The following is recounted in the first person.

Last night there was an earthquake, I think!! Around 10:30 PM, I was lying in bed getting ready to sleep when, for some reason, my bed started shaking like crazy. I was so scared I thought I was going to die!! Did anyone else feel the earthquake last night?

Travel Companion A said, No way!! There was no earthquake.
Travel Companion B said, It was probably just someone walking past your room that made it shake.
Travel Companion C: Hmm? But you felt like the whole bed was shaking. If it were an earthquake, it wouldn’t just shake your bed. I’m guessing someone was “shaking your bed”……

At these words, everyone fell silent for a moment. The girl could only laugh awkwardly and said, No way~ probably not. The matter was dropped, and we went on to prepare for the next day’s trip. We were driving to another city that day, but who knew that later that night, another strange little incident would occur—except this time, it happened to me……
