Nan’ao is an important stopover between Yilan and Hualien. Most drivers stop here to take a break, grab a bite, and then hit the road. This black vinegar noodle spot is a super popular little eatery right on Nan’ao’s main street (Provincial Highway 9).

The place doesn’t focus much on appearances—it’s very simple and unpretentious.

The black vinegar noodles and peeled chili chicken, red and green together, make for a deliciously perfect match.

The shop’s decor is also very basic.

I ordered the black vinegar noodles!! As soon as it was served, I could smell the faint aroma of vinegar. It’s simple—just a bowl of dry noodles.

But when I picked up the noodles, I realized just how smooth and slippery these black vinegar noodles were. The vinegar flavor is mild and well-balanced—most people should find it agreeable. I’d expected it to taste like the famous Foolish Dry Noodles, which use only vinegar for seasoning, but the vinegar here is noticeably different. The flavor is natural and simple, the texture silky, and it’s genuinely delicious.

The peeled chili chicken soup is slightly spicy, but really tasty. It’s the perfect broth for making chicken soup. What seemed like just plain chili and chicken becomes a whole lot more delicious with the broth added!! It really brings out all the umami.

Hehe, the photos this time came out a bit blurry!! But that in no way detracts from how tasty it is. Travelers along the Su-Hua Highway, don’t forget to try this delicious chicken soup.
