That day, while visiting Tainan, we stayed at a nearby homestay. After checking in, we headed to Anping Old Street in search of food. It was extremely hot that day, and we noticed the staff at Rui Zhen Shrimp Wontons energetically hawking their wares. We remembered this place was highly recommended online, so we decided to give it a try.

The auntie working at the shop was very kind and attentive. She quickly brought us the menu to order, fiddled with the fan to keep us cool, clearly worried we might be too hot. After a quick discussion with my husband, we ordered a plate of fried shrimp wontons and a plate of oyster omelette.

Fried Shrimp Wontons – NT$60

The handmade shrimp wontons are filled with pork hind leg meat and the locally unique fire-roasted shrimp. After being deep-fried, they come out with a crispy outer layer.

You can see the whole fire-roasted shrimp filling inside, seasoned only with a touch of salt and pepper, letting the savory richness of the meat shine through. No wonder it’s one of the shop’s most popular signature items.

Oyster Omelette – NT$60

Tainan is known for its oysters, so we were excited to try a fresh oyster omelette here. The soft and chewy texture paired with a specially made sauce earned praise from my husband, who noted the sweet-and-salty flavor caters to southern Taiwanese tastes, which suited us just fine.

The oysters were about this size. Though there weren’t many of them, the overall taste of the omelette was still quite good.

There’s now a main branch and a branch store. The main branch has air conditioning, but the branch doesn’t, so it can get pretty hot in the summer. Winter is a bit more comfortable. Anping is full of local traditional snacks, and the flame-shaped shrimp wontons are crispy and delicious, perfect for grabbing and eating on the go in a paper bag. I wonder if the shop offers that service. If you have a chance to visit Anping Old Street, Rui Zhen Shrimp Wontons is definitely worth checking out.
