Taiwan is a mountainous island, and autumn offers many great spots for maple leaf viewing, such as Aowanda, Fushoushan, Lishan, Taipingshan... and the [Mingchi National Forest Recreation Area].
This was taken in late autumn 2012, just when the autumn colors were at their peak. The reflection of the bald cypress and maple trees in the lake was breathtaking. Though Mingchi isn’t very large, it takes on a dreamy quality when shrouded in mist. With its beautiful mountains and waters, and ethereal clouds and fog, it feels like walking through a fairyland, and the air is refreshingly crisp and invigorating. Visiting here on a holiday can be very relaxing. Although I came to Mingchi this time when winter was setting in and many maple leaves had already fallen, if you visit around mid-November, you should be able to see even more vibrant red foliage. And if you come in early December, you’ll still get to enjoy the bald cypress, so it’s still very much worth it.
The [Mingchi National Forest Recreation Area] is located at the starting point of the Northern Cross-Island Highway in Yilan. For those in northern Taiwan, it's now very convenient to get to Mingchi via the Xueshan Tunnel. In addition to the forest amusement park, there’s also the Mingchi Villa nearby. The villa features Mingchi Sacred Tree, so be sure to check that out too. Here you’ll find sacred trees, ginkgoes, and maple leaves, plus cherry blossoms in spring. However, popular dates can book up quickly, so it’s recommended to reserve lodging in advance and plan ahead. A one-day trip to Mingchi works fine, or you could stay in Yilan for a more leisurely experience.
