Text & Photos /Burnt-Out Nurse
Sunlight Xuxu is a very popular brunch and light meal restaurant in the south. But here at Southern Homestead, in addition to their classic brunch offerings, they’ve added dinner and wine-paired dishes. This article might again make some think it’s an advertorial, right? I, the burnt-out nurse, stayed at Southern Homestead for four days. Tainan was seriously blazing hot – so hot that this burnt-out nurse didn’t even want to go out.
Luckily, Sunlight Xuxu has a partnership with Southern Homestead, and since it’s located on the second floor of the hotel, they’ve expanded beyond just brunch to include other meals. So in addition to the brunch included with the stay, there are also options for those who don’t want to go out and prefer to dine here for dinner. After four days, I had accumulated a ton of food photos. Even when I was sorting through them myself, it felt like I was writing an advertorial……

▲ Many fans asked where this photo was taken after posting it – haha, it’s right at the entrance of Sunlight Xuxu.

▲ The staircase from the first to the second floor is covered in murals.

▲ It’s not just a brunch spot, but because it’s part of the hotel, even just the dining space feels warm and inviting.
The menu includes recommended dinner dishes as well as à la carte wine-paired meals.
Prices range from 168 to 358 NTD. I’m not sure what everyone thinks about the pricing, but after eating here for several days, I found it quite good value. Not only are the portions big, but the set meals come with a main dish, salad, soup, and bread – it really fills you up.
What I found most recommendable, aside from the affordable prices, is that they also add some uniquely Taiwanese snacks as bar chasers. For example, the “Mountain Gem Millet Zongzi” is presented using indigenous millet zongzi, and this time I was amazed by the “Braised Chewy Pork Skin Rolls” – made with pork skin, tomatoes, and green onions, this trio brings a mildly spicy flavor that makes you want to pair it with a drink. Unfortunately, while they have wine-paired dishes, they don’t offer beer – only cocktails, fruit wines, and red wine.

Tapas appetizers – they really look super appetizing!
And the visual presentation alone makes you want to grab your camera, but the generous ingredients aren’t just photogenic – they taste great too. Even the bread at the bottom is specially selected from a bakery. As for which one? After asking the staff and finding out it’s not homemade, I didn’t press further – unless they offered the info themselves, I didn’t want to seem nosy. Let’s just keep that as the shop’s little trade secret~

Round one – The dinner that day was seriously too much!
Thanks to a certain Ali who’s amazing at ordering, I was almost rolling my eyes, but every dish was actually pretty impressive. Aside from noodles, the rice served was multigrain. The dinner dishes we ordered that day were all tasty, but those wine-paired items – Fried Chicken Couple, Refreshing Thai Salad, and Red Sizzling Dry Spicy Shrimp – were seriously delicious, especially the Braised Chewy Pork Skin Rolls. That day, I ate more pork skin than ever before. It was flavorful and tender, not gross at all, and paired with tomato it became refreshing again. The Thai sauce was spicy and aromatic, making me sniffle while unconsciously reaching for another bite.

Another day that was too hot to go out – dinner was another easy hotel restaurant meal.
Everyone probably thinks that as a blogger, I’d want to go explore and share Tainan’s food scene, haha, nope. Once you hit a certain age, you just get lazy and want to sleep. So the two of us were writing articles and wondering what to eat. Ten minutes later, we decided to just throw on slippers and head downstairs for a meal. The most appealing item on the menu was the Grilled Choice Steak – so we went with that, plus a few sides. Simple and satisfying, and we were nearly knocked out from being too full. Yep, getting old really means you can’t handle eating too much.

Back to the food – the “Mountain Gem Millet Zongzi” combines traditional indigenous flavors with the chef’s creative touch. It enhances the taste without overshadowing the original zongzi flavor. It’s genuinely delicious.

For the meal, a steak set over 300 NTD comes with a pretty generous portion of beef, and the texture is tender and tasty. The chicken leg cutlet from across the strait is also huge.
The side bread, which has a texture similar to focaccia, is also really delicious. The whole set meal is super filling. That time when Ali randomly ordered, it literally felt like heaven for me……
