Emerald green, the color of summer, stretches as far as the eye can see, giving your eyes a soothing spa-like experience and relieving screen fatigue. Located in Guangfu Township, Hualien, “Matai’an” is a natural swamp wetland formed by spring water, spanning 12 hectares. The water surface is covered with Taiwan water lilies, whose leaves resemble those of lotuses and bloom with small yellow flowers. The endless views make you feel as though you’re inside Monet’s Water Lilies, savoring the artist’s tranquil charm.

Matai’an Wetlands is less than a 10-minute drive from Guangfu Sugar Factory. The lotus season runs annually from May to August and is expected to last until October, so there’s still time to admire the scene reminiscent of a Monet painting.

Matai’an Wetlands has been a fishing and farming site for the Amis Matai’an Tribe since ancient times. The origin of its name comes from the fact that the area used to be covered with tree beans called “Vataan,” which over time the Amis people referred to as “Matai’an.” To this day, it remains minimally developed, preserving its original living culture. It feels like stepping into a secluded green treasure trove, cut off from the mundane world, where even the air tastes fresh and sweet.

Most visitors head directly to Xinglv Farm, walking along the wooden boardwalk observation bridge to the viewing platform, or cycling along the bike path. On both sides lie endless wetland landscapes, with lush mountains rising ahead. The lake is dotted with blooming lotus flowers and serves as a habitat for birds, frogs, and various aquatic plants and animals. The vibrant atmosphere naturally invigorates your spirit.

If you have the leisure, enjoying a cup of coffee at Mafulong Café is also a delightful idea. Through the window, you can admire the natural surroundings. Of course, if you visit during the lotus season, you can also learn about the Amis tribe’s unique “stone-boiled” cooking method and rich cultural traditions, as well as participate in nighttime activities.
