It’s not easy to make a name in the competitive world of frozen treats, but Taoyuan’s newly opened “Chen Shi ·庶民甜品” not only serves up matcha azuki bean shaved ice, but also innovatively combines desserts like crème brûlée and tiramisu with shaved ice — available in limited quantities daily. In just over a month since opening, it has drawn crowds of food lovers and started a visual dessert craze on Instagram.

“Chen Shi ·庶民甜品” is located on the outskirts of the Chung Yuan University commercial area, mixing beloved desserts favored by young urbanites with frozen treats. Among them, the limited-edition brown sugar crème brûlée and tiramisu shaved ice are both priced at NT$140, with about 10–20 portions available daily.

The owner said the inspiration for the brown sugar crème brûlée came from a friend in Osaka. It uses Okinawan brown sugar shaved ice as a base, topped with brown sugar syrup and caramel sauce, and finished with a crème brûlée-like custard that is briefly flambéed with a torch — treating customers to a mini fire show before they dig in.

In addition to the daily limited offerings, the matcha trio is a dream come true for matcha lovers. It features a crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside matcha brownie placed on a hot plate, topped with matcha ice cream, and drizzled with matcha milk sauce. As it sizzles on the iron plate, the contrast between cold and hot delivers a matcha-flavored version of a molten brownie.

Additionally, Black Lulu and soybean azuki bean defy the pretty image of visual desserts. The owner explained that Black Lulu is primarily made with sesame and taro, resulting in a texture resembling muddy sludge — offering a uniquely unusual flavor.
Going against the norm, the owner said the ever-evolving flavors cater to young people’s love for novelty. The goal is to offer relatively affordable options in a competitive market, and more new flavors will continue to be introduced to surprise customers.
