Fangliao Art Village Has "Cows" – A New Highlight for Leisurely Exploration in Pingtung

Recently, many "cows" have popped up in the F3 Art & Cultural District of Fangliao, Pingtung. On the village’s large lawn, three mosaic water buffaloes blend harmoniously with the natural landscape. Walk into the alleys, and you’ll find a group of charming little snails, each with its own unique charm—offering a new highlight for leisurely strolls through the art village.

Teacher Dai Weili, the designer of the three mosaic cows, explained that in the earlier agricultural period, herds of water buffaloes were often seen grazing along the Beishi Stream in Fangliao. At that time, water buffaloes and rice fields were essential to people’s daily lives—a beautiful sight from the past that is seldom seen today.

This time, leading teachers and students from Fangliao High School, Fanglao Elementary School, and Qiaode German Elementary School, Teacher Dai facilitated a public art project called the “Fangliao Cattle Trilogy.” Using clay-sculpted water buffaloes and mosaic tiles, the collaborative work introduces young students to the beauty of their hometown, while conveying the persevering and hard-working Taiwanese spirit represented by water buffaloes. The trio of cows also symbolizes a warm family—a father, a mother, and their child—adding both leisure appeal and artistic beauty to the art village.

Teacher Huang Yingquan, the designer of the little snails, explained that he chose snails as the main theme to express the slow-living philosophy of “slowing down to discover beauty.” The entire creative process—from preparing the soil, shaping, air-drying, firing in kilns, to wood-firing—was carried out by members of community school workshops. These snails are scattered across the pathways and lawns, forming a “Snail Alley,” which has become another new attraction in the art village.

The ongoing “Fangliao Art Festival” offers a variety of free art workshops, an art and farmers’ market, and the “Trains That Love to Sing” grassland concert until the end of October. There will also be surprise lucky draw events from time to time. Everyone is encouraged to slow down, visit Fangliao, and enjoy the beautiful mountain and sea scenery.
