Meet the literati at the Tainan Waterfront Art Festival — The Tainan Canal Dreams Anew

Strolling across the newly lit Xin-Lin-An Bridge at night, you’ll notice many beautiful art installations that add diverse charms to the canal’s nighttime scenery. These are part of an environmental revitalization initiative launched by local residents of Hai’an Li — the “First Tainan Waterfront Art Festival,” which runs for four weeks from December 20 to January 11, making its dazzling debut at No. 129, Huancheng Street, West Central District.

The materials used in these art installations come at extremely low costs and are quite different from conventional ones. The artists gathered “free” materials from various sources, most of which are considered trash or waste by the average person, including mostly plastic bottles, glass, broken fishing nets, Styrofoam, and plastic bottle caps. By repurposing these non-renewable items, and centering the theme around light, the Tainan Canal radiates a gentle yet firm energy in the darkness of night.

The works of 10 artists not only advocate for environmental sustainability but also further explore issues such as ecological conservation and the historical stories of old Tainan, fully expressing Taiwan’s locally rooted culture of love for home and land. This green art, combining artistic expression, cultural significance, and environmental awareness, not only grants the Tainan Canal a uniquely beautiful nightscape, but is also believed to attract tourist crowds and become a new gathering spot for “literati” who care about the environment and love art.
