Behind an unassuming roadside stall, where delicious sponge cakes and red bean pancakes are shared with the public, stands Wang Yanjun—a young woman from China’s northeastern region. In 2006, she met her ex-husband online, who was living in Taiwan at the time. Shortly after graduating from university, she married him and moved 2,000 kilometers away from home to Taiwan for love. Due to restrictions that prevented mainland spouses from working in Taiwan within the first two years, the ambitious businesswoman, unwilling to be just a housewife, set up a red bean pancake stall in front of the bakery opened by her father-in-law.

Later, upon customer suggestions, she also began selling sponge cakes. Whether it was developing new red bean pancake flavors or designing creative sponge cake shapes, everything was the result of her own trial-and-error experimentation. In 2011, Wang Yanjun was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her salivary gland and underwent two surgeries within just half a month. She later divorced her ex-husband due to clashing personalities and values—but these successive blows did not knock her down.

Liu Fen Tian Red Bean Pancakes offers heart-shaped, dog-paw, egg-shaped, six different cartoon-character designs, and newly launched sponge cakes in four smiling styles. Wang Yanjun explained that the full registered name of Liu Fen Tian Red Bean Pancakes is “Xiang Bei Mei Liu Fen Tian Red Bean Pancakes.” “Xiang Bei Mei” means “a girl from the north,” and “Liu Fen Tian” refers to its signature six-parts sweetness. She laughed as she clarified that people from northern China generally prefer strong flavors like spicy and salty, and she herself isn’t a fan of overly sweet treats. She also wanted to promote healthier eating. “Six parts sweet is just a little sweeter than five—it’s sweet but not cloying, just right.”

Since opening, the brand has expanded to four locations (including three franchise stores). Whenever someone wants to open a franchise, Wang Yanjun personally and generously teaches everything—from ingredient preparation to oven usage. When asked about her personal favorite item in the store, she recommended the newly launched double-filling red bean pancakes released on the 18th, whether peanut butter cream or red bean cream, both are incredibly delicious and worth trying.
