Nestled in the alleys of Jianguo, Tainan, right by Qingshan Fishing Port, it’s hard to imagine that such a popular old shop lies hidden among residential houses. Xiu Li Oyster Fritters has been around for about 40 years, but if you trace it back to its founder from the Japanese colonial period, it’s actually a century-old establishment.

It’s easier to start your search from Qingshan Fishing Port. If you really can’t find it, just ask the locals—they’re all very friendly. That day, after following the GPS and squeezing through the alleys without success, I had just parked my car and was about to ask some grandmas chatting by their door when one of them immediately asked, “Xiu Li Oyster Fritters? Go that way.” Super quick and straightforward XDD I walked in the direction she pointed, and before long, I saw the scene—yes, this is it!!

Even on a weekday, there’s still such a crowd—it’s the magic of a well-reputed old shop. There’s never a time when it’s empty, so if you want to eat here, be patient and find it first XDD Check out the menu on the wall—there’s only one menu, no need to fill out paper forms. Just look at it and order directly from the boss. The creative design infused with local character is truly impressive.

While waiting, take some photos by the small painted wall!! Doodoo Dragon also checked in at Qingkun. Though it’s just a small wall, it’s still super cute and heartwarming~

I ordered an oyster fritter and a squid fritter—the exterior was golden and crispy, making my mouth water.

The filling was very rich and, of course, very hot XDD There were quite a few oysters, though they were a bit smaller compared to those from seaside farms. I personally prefer the squid, which, even when cut into small pieces, remained chewy and delicious!!

Nearby aunties were diligently digging up fresh oysters, which were then immediately sent over to be fried into oyster fritters right next door~~~

Since you’re already here, you absolutely can’t miss another popular spot—the famous Qianbei Uncle’s Ice Shop!!!

Walk through the narrow alleyway (it’s really tiny, just wide enough for a scooter), and if you haven’t seen what the shop front looks like beforehand, you might search for a while before turning to the aunties for help again. “Di jia!” The grandma cheerfully gave directions again, and then I understood why I hadn’t found it… You don’t arrive at the main entrance—the place looks more like a residence from the outside!!

This long-standing old ice shop serves many classic traditional Taiwanese ice desserts, an indispensable part of local daily life.

I ordered a milk ice and a taro ice—they clearly have that old-school flavor. No artificial coloring, so they look more rustic than modern ice treats, but the texture and ingredients are definitely top-notch.

A whole cup costs just a mere 20 NT dollars. I prefer the taro flavor a bit more—the actual taro bits add a nice chewy texture and richer taro aroma.

After finishing the ice, I headed back and made a stop at Qigu Lake to catch the sunset—it was truly beautiful.
