Takeaway New Year’s Eve meals from hotels are nothing new, but a 1.5kg tomahawk steak available for takeaway? That’s a rare one. Marco Polo Restaurant under Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Taipei has carved out a unique niche in this year’s New Year’s Eve meal battle. In addition to offering Western-style New Year’s Eve set menus, they also provide à la carte takeaway options such as steak and roast suckling pig — including an Australian wagyu tomahawk steak.

The Australian wagyu tomahawk steak is cut from the 6th to 10th ribs of the cow, with only up to 10 portions available per cow. Chef Marco Birolini of Marco Polo Restaurant first marinates the steak with olive oil, rosemary, thyme, and other spices, then sears it in a pan to lock in the juices before roasting it in the oven for 20 minutes. The price is NT$8,500 (for two people).

In addition to the steak, there’s also “Roast Suckling Pig with Garlic Spinach, Crispy Flat Beans, and Red Wine Sauce.” This dish uses a two-kilogram suckling pig, marinated for a day with thyme, rosemary, saltwater, and garlic, then stuffed with a liver and heart mousse and slow-cooked at low temperature for 8 hours. Price: NT$990. Other takeaway dishes include Fisherman’s Style Tomato Soup, Parsley Clam Spaghetti, and Lombardy Spicy Tripe Soup.
