To make it easier for travelers to explore beyond Taiwan, China Airlines launched its new independent travel brand “Backpacker Holidays” in July 2014, emphasizing more affordable options for the public. Today, aside from holding a press conference to introduce the backpacker itineraries, China Airlines also announced the results of its recent online PK event for the “Backpacker King,” which was won by “European Travel Girl” out of 103 competing groups.
China Airlines’ first wave of backpacker itineraries includes five destinations: Tokyo, Osaka, Busan, Okinawa, and Singapore. The lowest price starts at NT$8,500 for a three-day-two-night trip to Okinawa, while Tokyo trips start at NT$11,600 for the same duration. Gong Yuanzhao, Associate Manager of China Airlines’ Passenger Marketing Department, stated that unlike low-cost carriers with fluctuating ticket prices and extra fees for seat selection and checked baggage, as well as the inflexibility and high costs of group tours, the Backpacker Holidays package includes free seat selection, in-flight meals, and 20kg of checked baggage. The aim is to encourage more young people to travel abroad with these attractive prices.

The “Backpacker King” announced today, “European Travel Girl” Zhou [surname] and her companion, quit their jobs in 2014 to embark on a 72-day, five-country journey across Europe. Their rich travel experience, compelling stories, and vibrant personalities won over 85,324 voters, making them the champions of this competition.
European Travel Girl shared that since both of them pre-booked affordable transportation tickets and accommodations, or tried alternative lodging options such as home exchanges and couch surfing, their total expenses for the three-month trip amounted to less than NT$180,000 per person. More importantly, they found the backpacking experience to be incredibly rewarding, allowing them to enjoy unique encounters, meet a diverse range of people, and feel a sense of connection and love.
