Cotton Candy Made into Japanese-Style Bento Boxes – A Popular Souvenir Reviving Kyoto’s Shopping Streets

In the afternoon, I visited the Furukawa Town Shopping Street in Kyoto. It’s a down-to-earth shopping street, not as bustling or touristy as Nishiki Market. On this roughly 250-meter-long street, the air is filled with the chatter and laughter of locals and shopkeepers. At one point along the street, a white shop with a European vibe caught my eye.

A specialty cotton candy shop“Jeremy & Jemimah”has become a popular destination in Kyoto in recent years. Its first store opened in yG Park, where the owners developed a variety of unique cotton candy flavors and arranged them in bento boxes with a traditional Japanese aesthetic, aiming to showcase a modern take on Kyoto souvenirs. These distinctive cotton candy creations have taken the younger traveler crowd by storm and have naturally become one of the city’s must-buy souvenirs.

yG Park is always teeming with visitors, so it’s no surprise that “Jeremy & Jemimah” garnered attention when it opened there. However, its second location is in the Furukawa Town Shopping Street, where the streets are gray and quiet, with almost no tourists in sight. The narrow alleyway is lined mostly with old-fashioned shops. I couldn’t help but ask why they chose to open a store here.
