A Must-Visit in Hualien & Taitung: The Lesser-Known Yet Stunningly Photogenic “Xincheng Railway Station”

There’s such a beautiful railway station in Eastern Taiwan! As part of a renovation and revitalization project for stations in the Hualien-Taitung region, Xincheng Railway Station—located closest to Taroko Gorge—was redesigned with the iconic Taroko Canyon as its architectural inspiration. Its ultra-modern exterior has made it one of the most dreamy stations in the area, truly catching everyone’s eye.

Also known as Taroko Railway Station, Xincheng Station is the only station in Taiwan with an alias, having been renamed after its 2016 renovation. The station is designed with the concept of a “gate,” drawing inspiration from the way the Liwu River cuts through Taroko Canyon, resulting in a V-shaped facade that embodies the bold welcome and iconic presence of Eastern Taiwan’s gateway. Additionally, calligrapher Zhu Zhen-nan inscribed the station name, adding a cultural touch. Beyond convenient travel facilities and a passenger-friendly environment, the redesign also introduced public art aesthetics into the space, creating a beautiful intersection between transportation and the humanities.
