Beneath its scenic beauty, Guam still bears many historical scars left by world wars. Many military enthusiasts born in peaceful times list Guam as an essential destination to commemorate World War II. Among them, the Asan Bay Overlook, which offers views of the picturesque bay, features a Pacific War Memorial Wall that has just been restored recently. A memorial ceremony was specially held on January 16 to allow attendees to mourn the heroes who fell during the Pacific War.

During World War II, Guam was ravaged by relentless warfare and occupied by Japan. Elderly residents on the island still vividly remember the brutal battles between the United States and Japan. The Pacific War Memorial Wall pays tribute to the U.S. servicemen who defended Guam between 1941 and 1942, and those who sacrificed their lives to liberate Guam in 1944. This memorial wall has undergone multiple restorations, with over 17,000 names of fallen heroes engraved on 103 granite slabs. The recent restoration project not only involved redesigning the wall but also corrected previously omitted or misspelled names of servicemen, as well as the names of Guam residents who suffered atrocities or tragically lost their lives during the war.
