History Meets Music: Explore the Hidden Sugar Tanks at Ren De Sugar Refinery in a Treasure Hunt Adventure

This year, Shiyi Drum Cultural and Creative Park takes on an interdisciplinary challenge, preserving the original appearance of Ren De Sugar Refinery and integrating local stories with Shiyi Drum music to create an interactive experience space, safeguarding culturally valuable heritage assets, fully revitalizing industrial heritage and repurposing idle spaces. This special project“Golden Tale Golden Tale – Taiwan’s Treasure”also invites the public to embark on a quest to uncover the mysterious treasures hidden within the underground sugar tanks.

The underground molasses tanks in Shiyi Cultural and Creative Park are a rare example of unique subterranean architecture in Taiwan. The beams and triangular structures evoke a sense of traversing through a time tunnel. Especially under sunlight and lighting, they further showcase the building’s three-dimensionality, transparency, and interplay of spaces. During World War II, this site was used to produce industrial alcohol and became a key target for U.S. air raids on Japanese forces, which is why many air-raid shelters can still be seen around the park, adding a wartime atmosphere.

This special project by Shiyi Cultural and Creative Park is called “Golden Tale – Taiwan’s Treasure.” It opens up a treasure hunt activity, inviting the public to search for golden treasures hidden in the underground sugar tanks. In October, experimental music theater performances are also planned, making sustainable use of the remaining value to maintain the space for continued use, telling the stories of the sugar refinery, evoking more memories and resonance, and reawakening the thrill of the century-old sugar factory.
