It’s been 1922 days and still not spoiled — Iceland’s “last McDonald’s” becomes a tourist attraction

Everyone knows to go to McDonald’s for fries and burgers. But have you ever thought about seeing the “last McDonald’s” in a history museum? The question sounds odd, but it actually happened. According to the UK’s Daily Mail, after Iceland’s economic collapse in 2008, the global fast-food chain McDonald’s pulled out of the country the following year.The “last McDonald’s” was sold in October 2009 — that’s 1922 days ago as of today (February 3). This “last McDonald’s” has been under strict supervision and remains unspoiled to this day.

The “last McDonald’s” was once displayed at the National Museum, but it has now been moved to the “Bus Hostel” in the capital city of Reykjavik, where it is still exhibited in its original state.

Given that this item has effectively “gone extinct” in Iceland, the hostel has taken a very serious approach, diligently installing a camera to monitor the burger’s decay and live-streaming it online for travelers who can’t visit in person(see image above).

“You’ll need patience to observe its gradual changes,” advises the website. These days, visiting Iceland isn’t just about chasing the northern lights or soaking in hot springs — paying homage to the “last McDonald’s” in all of Iceland at the Bus Hostel is quite an interesting experience too.
