One flavor per day only — Taipei’s ice cream paired with spiced mulled wine

Even though the weather is getting cooler, eating ice cream isn’t seasonal in Taiwan, right?

Front Street Ice Cream has long been near the top of my “must-visit” list. Every time I see their next week’s flavors posted on their Facebook page, it occasionally makes me gasp in surprise. Take the “Lychee Whiskey” flavor, for instance — an ice cream made with roasted dried lychees topped with a specially mixed whiskey sauce, or the “Earl Grey Tequila,” which is based on Twinings Earl Grey tea and finished with a citrusy tequila glaze…., Just imagining them isn’t enough to satisfy my curiosity about Front Street Ice Cream.

This time, I arrived at the shop at 1 p.m. sharp, right when they opened, but I wasn’t even the first customer — it seemed a family of tourists visiting Taipei had beaten me to it. Just three or four people pretty much filled up the seating inside.

If you enjoy your ice cream inside the shop, there’s only one flavor available per day, which changes every few days. The daily flavor is posted on their Facebook page, but the regular lineup is usually from the ones shown in the photo below, with occasional special flavors. There are also boxed ice creams available for takeaway.

I ordered that day’s flavor — soy milk black tea ice cream — for myself along with a glass of spiced mulled wine. Each bite delivered a rich blend of soybean milk and tea aroma, with crispy buckwheat popcorn and soft, chewy peanuts. After cooling down with that, I took a small sip of the warm, intoxicating spiced wine. One Taiwanese, one Western — who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

I had a brief yet memorable taste experience at Front Street Ice Cream, and I look forward to coming back again.
