Fuzhou Pepper Pork Buns
Wang Tzu-wei, who won the gold medal in men’s singles badminton at the Taipei Universiade, caused the pepper bun stall operated by his family to go viral. Many fans came to pay homage and support the gold medalist with their wallets. Since the buns are made and baked fresh on the spot, the entire process takes about an hour, and only around 60 can be baked at a time, often selling out as soon as they come out of the oven. To prevent customers from waiting too long, Mom Wang even temporarily used playing cards as numbered tickets.
The Fuzhou pepper pork bun stall run by Wang Tzu-wei’s family is located right across from the entrance of Ningxia Night Market on Minsheng West Road. It has been in business for nearly 70 years and is currently co-managed by Dad Wang and Uncle Wang (Wang Tzu-wei’s uncle). The couple raised Wang Tzu-wei with the income from this bun stall. The buns come in two types—fatty and lean—priced at NT$35 and NT$40 respectively. They’re generously stuffed and considered quite affordable in Taipei.
