Every year when August and September roll around and you feel like heading out to enjoy the flowers, your mind probably jumps straight to the golden needle flower season. The entire mountain turns a brilliant yellow, heralding the arrival of autumn and drawing large crowds of tourists to eastern Taiwan for this seasonal pilgrimage. While miscanthus flowers may not be as vividly colored as golden needles, their soft, billowy white expanse creates the perfect backdrop for dreamy, laid-back photos. Here are three autumn-exclusive hidden miscanthus viewing spots that photography lovers definitely shouldn’t miss.

1. Under Dajia Bridge

When you visit Dajia, besides checking out the Studio Ghibli-style "Totoro bus," you can also take a stroll along the riverbank. The miscanthus flowers here are spectacular—a vast sea of white blossoms just waiting to be photographed. Both daytime and sunset lighting offer uniquely beautiful moods. Climb up onto the bridge for an even better vantage point to capture the beauty of the entire miscanthus field.

2. Under Beiliao Bridge

If you want to avoid the crowds, this is definitely one of the hidden gems among the miscanthus seas. Stretching along the embankment and following the stream, the entire area is soothing to the eyes and relaxing just to look at. No matter how you shoot it, the photos come out great—especially with you standing in the middle. There’s also a nearby stream where you can play in the water. But since the spot is a bit remote, safety first—go with a friend if possible. Also, since miscanthus can cause itching when it touches your skin, it’s best to wear long sleeves and pants.

This green oasis is covered with snow-white miscanthus flowers, and the Grass Mountain Yue Shi Jie looks like it's blanketed in snow every autumn—reminiscent of scenes from the movie “Norwegian Wood.” Autumn’s desolate beauty makes every snapshot stunning.
