Double Drainage Canal Westward Journey Staircase Welcomes Spring – Everyone Is Welcome to Enjoy the Outdoors

In 2014, New Taipei City carried out a series of beautification projects on the waterfront stepped pathways around the Double Drainage Canal. The newly painted staircases are not only beautiful but also eye-catching. The final painted staircase features a quirky illustration of characters from "Journey to the West" ice skating, displayed on the viewing steps at the intersection of Wugu Shuhong 1st Road and Shuhong 6th Road, becoming another highlight.

To make it easier for the public to explore these distinctive painted staircases, the New Taipei City Water Resources Bureau has specially presented the completed 12 painted staircases via an electronic map, available at http://iwater.ntpc.gov.tw/map/. To enhance the festive and joyful atmosphere, the bureau combined the final painted staircase with the traditional story of "Journey to the West," aligning it with the nearby ice-skating rink environment. The quirky image of Journey to the West characters ice skating was painted on the viewing steps at the intersection of Wugu Shuhong 1st Road and Shuhong 6th Road, transforming the originally cold concrete staircase into the most prominent highlight in the surrounding area.

The Water Resources Bureau stated that in 2014, 12 stepped pathways were painted. The painting approach took into account the safety of pedestrians using the stairs at night, with principles including the design of clear walking lines and safe pathways. Currently, priority is given to painting older or poorly lit staircases to effectively improve the safety and recreational enjoyment of the city’s waterfront stepped areas.
